The PIP was submitted by lead partners HaskoningDHV and Rebel, who will now work alongside AWID, WaterConnect, and the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) to further develop, finance, construct, and operate an integrated water supply and wastewater treatment project in Naivasha, Kenya—a rapidly growing urban and industrial hub facing acute water challenges. The €90 million project aims to deliver safe, reliable drinking water to households in Naivasha and the nearby Special Economic Zone (SEZ) through the construction of new infrastructure and the provision of operational services.
Currently, many residents of Naivasha rely on water supplied through kiosks. A transition to household connections is expected to significantly improve quality of life and public health. With the town’s population projected to reach 575,000 by 2030, the need for resilient and expanded water infrastructure is urgent.
This challenge, combined with the Kenyan government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which prioritizes the Naivasha SEZ, highlights the importance of robust water supply and wastewater treatment systems as critical enablers of both social and economic development.
Dr. Ernest Kofi Poku, Executive Director – AWID, stated as ‘’The link between the community and industrial users, in addition to the commitment of multiple commercial and governmental partners – including the Kenyan Government – made this project very attractive.”
